Inconvenience this weekend in island’s entry and exit points
Beginning this Friday, November 6 at 8:00 pm through 5:00 am on Monday, November 9, roadwork will affect the entry and exit points of L'Île-des-Sœurs. It should be noted, however that these inconveniences will not cause any major jams as traffic is a little slower on weekends; there are also several alternatives for entering and leaving the island.
Some of these works are being carried out by the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) while the other works are being done by the contractor hired by Verdun Borough. The JCCBI will enlarge the viaduct that serves as an overhang for the “new” chemin de la Pointe Nord, at the far end of ramp 21 (exit 57N).
Chemin de la Pointe Nord will therefore be closed on the weekend. Exit 57N of highway 15 southbound will also be closed to traffic between this Friday at 8:00 pm and Monday morning at 5:00 am. During this period, drivers should use exit 57 and pass by Place du Commerce to reach the island’s northern section.
During this period, drivers leaving the island and headed towards the south shore or towards Montreal must therefore go through René-Lévesque Boulevard. Those who are headed for the south shore should take the ramp located in front of the fire station while those going downtown or taking highway 15 northbound should take the usual route on the northern tip. Note that Clément Bridge will remain open to traffic for drivers going downtown via the Bonaventure expressway. Access to highway 15 northbound will continue via the Alexander-Graham-Bell intersection as well.
People arriving in L’île-des-Sœurs from the south shore should take a new route because exit 57 from highway 15 north will be closed to traffic. They should take exit 58, cross Clément Bridge and follow the directions to come back on highway 15 south. These measures are necessary to allow workers to work on the new ramp all through Champlain Bridge, west of the Claude-Robutel intersection.
To summarise…
It isn’t easy to explain these detours and closures clearly, given the fact that segments of the road concerned are not identified clearly. On the JCCBI plans, the designations are done in a different way compared to the ones of the Borough’s. Readers are reminded of the three recommendations which will be in effect beginning at 8:00 on this Friday, November 6 until 5:00 am on Monday, November 9. Drivers who want to leave the island are obliged to take René-Lévesque Boulevard. This measure applies for people headed for the south shore as well as to those headed for Montreal.
Drivers who are arriving in the island from highway 15 south are obliged to take exit 57, the ramp of which is near the SAX complex.
Drivers arriving in the island from the south shore must take exit 58 on highway 15 north and follow directions which should be posted on sign boards on the edge of Bonaventure expressway.
