Guided tour of L’Île-des-Sœurs forest
To celebrate Earth Day, the Comité pour la protection du patrimoine-Île des Sœurs- CPP-IDS (heritage protection committee for L’Île des Sœurs) is inviting the public to a guided tour of the L'Île-des-Sœurs forest which will take place on Sunday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
This activity is being held in collaboration with the Club de Marche de L'Île-des-Sœurs (L'Île-des-Sœurs walking club) and the theme is “the wealth of the forest: biodiversity in a conservation zone.” Individuals are invited to bring their binoculars and to wear boots. The forest overflows with interesting points to observe, but the grounds are still wet and humid at this time of the year.

Interested participants will meet at 10:00 am at the Île-des-Sœurs elementary school located at 530 Gaspé Street. The tour should end an hour later; that is, 11:00 am.

CPP-IDS president Nina Gould wishes to remind everyone that the domaine Saint-Paul is one of the last of important wooded areas in Montreal’s south west region. Nestled in a migratory corridor, it forms part of the ecological territory of the Lachine Rapids. She confirms that to protect the biodiversity of this exceptional ecological forest, eight out of ten residents have expressed interest in preserving the island’s country-like atmosphere.

It is known that CPP-IDS recommended that a conservation servitude be established for the St. Paul wooded area and its buffer zones. Phase I of this servitude was established in 2006 and Mrs. Gould often made representations with officials to remind them of the urgency for expanding the protection coverage. This was again done during the April 6 Borough Council meeting. Mayor Claude Trudel responded that the issue is a highly complex one and that different parties were involved. He would hope, however, that the measures could be completed in the next few months.
