Public consultation to make former Esso Station historical monument

Designed by the internationally famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and built between 1967 and 1968 during early developments in L'Île-des-Sœurs, this gas station/garage is of the pavilion-type structure with exceptional heritage quality and interest. It was built on the lower segments of Île-des-Sœurs Boulevard and Berlioz Street.

The declaration of a building as a historical monument through cultural asset laws is the highest recognition that a municipality can have to ensure the preservation of buildings with public and historical interest, thanks to its use and architecture.

This important symbolic move is also an effective channel for informing residents as to their heritage and makes the building more admissible for restoration funding provided by Montreal.

In a related development, there is a proposal on the Montreal Council agenda for the adoption of a regulation authorising a $17 million infrastructure loan, to include the re-development of parks, green spaces and other works to continue residential and commercial development in Île-des-Sœurs, Verdun Borough.
