Not against the bridge, but...put it somewhere else!
During the most recent Council meeting, several L'Île-des-Sœurs residents expressed their opposition to building a bridge between the island and the mainland of Verdun. Residents from both sides filed petitions to denounce the location of the bridge which, according to them, seems to have been chosen.
A resident living in Brises du Fleuve filed a petition signed by 344 people who live in this area and who oppose the installation of a bridge near Galt Street on the mainland. Another Verdun resident who lives in one of the Club Marin towers filed a petition signed by 222 people who object to a bridge in their neighbourhood. This lady said that the people in this area are owners of deluxe condos and asked municipal officers to demonstrate common sense by respecting the character of their neighbourhood.

A third person also filed a petition containing 138 signatures of people opposed to this project. Following the steps of her predecessors who took to the microphone, she suggested other locations for a future bridge.

As he already explained several times, Mayor Claude Trudel confirmed that no decision had yet been taken regarding this project. He reminded residents that it was at the request of L'Île-des-Sœurs residents that a committee had been formed to study this option. They were worried about access to emergency services when there are traffic jams in the road network as was the case last winter. He also confirmed that officials would wait for the recommendations from Montreal’s Fire Department before analysing the various angles of this project.

“When the time comes for a final consideration,” Mr. Trudel said, “all factors will be taken into account including the location and costs.” He re-confirmed that the SIM decision must be received before they can proceed to the next step in this matter.
