Bloc Québécois candidate Thierry St-Cyr is re-elected
Outgoing deputy and Bloc Québécois candidate for Jeanne-LeBer Thierry St-Cyr was re-elected with majority of the votes going from 3,095 in 2006 to just 1153 in yesterday’s elections. Liberal Party candidate Christian Feuillette who was relatively unknown to residents of Verdun and the south west region two months before the election, stirred the old Liberal sentiments in Jeanne-LeBer by coming closely behind the outgoing deputy.
The voting polls closed at 9:30 pm. Only two committee offices remained active with the comings and goings of supporters and election workers: the Liberal Party committee riding of Christian Feuillette and that of the Bloc of Thierry St-Cyr. Attempts were made to visit the offices of the Conservative and NDP parties but their doors were closed. The Conservative Party office was obviously deserted. In the meantime, Bloc militants waited for the candidate by speculating on the results that trickled into the big screen. Little by little, the number of votes confirmed that Thierry St-Cyr was ahead. He arrived at the office at about 11:15 pm holding his daughter Chloé.

His re-election had just been announced and there was euphoria on the part of his representatives and organisers who all gathered around him.

In a brief speech, Thierry St-Cyr first thanked the voters of Jeanne-LeBer who once again showed their confidence in him and acknowledged the numerous volunteers who contributed to his victory. The young deputy emphasised that the “2006 victory was not an accidental error as his adversaries believed.” He also announced that his wife Marie-Claude was pregnant with their second child. In an interview, the re-elected candidate confirmed “that the campaign was difficult, but as with each campaign, the Quebec people were around to support him.” St-Cyr confided that “the course of the campaign changed with the Conservative vote suffering a meltdown”, he said.

Thierry St-Cyr’s comments were illustrated by the non-definitive results. The results are nevertheless significant because they placed the Conservative Party in fourth place behind the NDP. In fact, Conservative Party candidate Daniel Beaudin obtained only 5,011 votes as opposed to NPD candidate Daniel Breton who obtained 6,952.

Speaking of his principal opponent Christian Feuillette, Thierry St-Cyr said with humour “that it is the first time in Canadian history that a candidate is acting as a dummy of another person.” St-Cyr was alluding to the presence of Senator Raymond Lavigne who was standing behind Christian Feuillette. As for the months ahead and in spite of the late hour, the Bloc candidate discussed not only about defending Quebec’s interests, but also discussed soil de-contamination and the pressures to be applied for pushing the social housing issue in his riding.
