Pinter's 'The Caretaker' at the Centaur.
Harold Pinter's 'The Caretaker' at the Centaur
Classic play runs until April 22
"The Caretaker" was the first of Harold Pinter's plays to bring him artistic and commercial success, as well as national recognition in England. Until April 22, Montrealers will now have the opportunity to delve into the "Theatre of the Absurd".
In London, England, circa 1960, sits a dilapidated room with two sagging beds, an old gas-cooker, and junk-filled shelves owned by a tough guy with plans to redecorate the house. His brother, a neat, buttoned-up young man, brings a hobo back to share his room. What happens next is pure Pinter… failure to communicate, unexpected moments of violence and multiple shockwaves of incredible hilarity – also known as "Comedy of Menace" as Pinter's unique style has come to be known.
"The Caretaker" deals with the distance between reality and fantasy, family relationships, and the struggle for power. In true Pinter fashion, the time, place and language are ambiguous and fluid.
Nobel Laureate
Born in 1930 in Hackney, London to a working-class native English-Jewish family, Harold Pinter is the author of 29 plays and over 21 screenplays for film and television. In 1967, he won a Tony Award for Best Play for "The Homecoming" and in 2005 he was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature. An activist since the early 70s, Pinter abandoned his playwrighting career in 2005 to focus entirely on the causes close to his heart.
When he was awarded the Nobel Prize, this is what was said about him: "Pinter restored theatre to its basic elements: an enclosed space and unpredictable dialogue where people are at the mercy of each other and pretense crumbles."
Dates to keep in mind
