Elliot Mechanic: 30 years of practice

Barely back from Australia, dentist Elliot Mechanic is off to Russia and Romania to teach dentistry and will be away for 12 days. To celebrate his 30th year of dental practice in L'Île-des-Sœurs, Le Magazine spoke to this visionary who enjoys a fine global reputation for his approach to holistic health.

“Time certainly flies. My clients have become my second family. I continue to take those patients who have shown their confidence in me since I started in 1979”, Dr. Mechanic told Le Magazine in between two dental appointments in his clinic in 1 Place du Commerce.

Dr. Mechanic’s services have evolved with time. “At first I focused on young families because I was raising kids myself like the majority of island residents at that time.” After that – in the 1980s - Elliot Mechanic developed an interest in cosmetic dentistry and achieved one of the first documented veneer innovations in North America. In 1985, he pioneered the integration of implants. “From then on, I was able to offer total and cosmetic dental services with implants, thanks to an orthodontist and periodontist who are in my team.”

Staff of specialists

The secret of a general dentist’s success is to surround himself with specialists to help him achieve his concept of holistic health. “I visualise the finished product before starting”, Dr. Mechanic said. He practices what his family taught him when he was young – treat others as you want others to treat you. “I explain to my patients what results to expect based on their choices, always assuring them of quality care from my clinic.”

Dr. Mechanic fulfilled the rehabilitation and cosmetic needs of his patients in the 1990s. Then demand for his services grew significantly in 2000, a logical outcome of people wanting to improve their appearance. The dental vision that I’ve nurtured for the last 20 years has suddenly turned into a fashionable option”, he said with emphasis.

His popularity allowed him to expand his clinic and to employ more specialists who assist him in providing exceptional and complete services. Today, his staff is made up of a denturologist, two orthodontists, one periodontist and one implant specialist. Each specialist has a team of one to five professionals.

With his clinic’s fine reputation for its long term approach to holistic health, Elliot Mechanic has been able to accommodate six new patients a day since the beginning of 2009. His clinic also offers teeth whitening treatments that last for two hours.

Wears several hats

At fifty five years old, Dr. Mechanic is excited more than ever about dentistry. He gives conferences around the world, sharing his knowledge in cosmetics/aesthetics and advanced reconstruction methods. He is coordinator for the University of Toronto’s dental rehabilitation and cosmetic programme. He founded the Cosmetic Dental Association of Canada and is the cosmetic editor of Oral Health, the only Canadian periodical in dentistry. “It was after 30 years of practicing that I discovered that I still have the energy of a new graduate and able to count on the best team. I am proud of their devotion and the high standards which they have established.” In addition to his work and his four grown-up daughters, he welcomes young people to his music studio which he set up in a church.
