This important soccer event welcomed 277 teams with close to 5,000 participants from cities including Sherbrooke, Blainville, Gatineau, Thetford Mines, and Sao Paolo, Brazil ? The ten teams that were registered in the girls’ competitive U16 category makes L’Île-des-Soeurs’s victory a significant achievement and a real testament to their abilities and determination.
The games played by IDS over the weekend were all close matches, with some hard-fought victories made even tougher in light of the mercury climbing to above 33c on the pitch, and the humidity contributing to exhausting conditions.
Our girls of L’Île-des-Soeurs held the opponents to zero goals throughout the tournament, with goalkeeper Alexandrine --- making some truly incredible stops along the way, earning herself the team’s MVP award. A flurry of saves by the goalkeeper in the dying moments of the semi-final match were considered by Coach Peloso “stops that even Casillas would have had trouble with”, and ensured that the team advance to their ultimate gold-medal winning final match.
It was a great team effort, and compliments to all players, including (picture from left to right / top to bottom) Roxane Trudeau-Drolet – Anne-Marie Langlois – Sophia Grégoire-Boyer – Chloé Evans – Anais Grégoire-Boyer – Rebecca Barazin – Cloé Trout-Bilodeau – Vanessa Martinez – Félicie Pelletier – Katya Molson – Gabrielle Brault – Ana-Luiza Freire-Cardadeno – Mariana Ramos-Garza – Shana Freddi – Alexandrine Paradis – Stéphanie Bouasria – Ariane Bégin – Samantha Peloso as well as coach and assistants Neil Peloso, John Molson and Raffaele Freddi.
